Tennis enthusiasts in Launceston are celebrating the grand opening of a new $3.5 million “state-of-the-art” tennis centre, which will host the upcoming Launceston International tournament.
Minister for Sport and Recreation Nic Street joined Tennis Tasmania CEO Darren Sturgess and Mayor Matthew Garwood for the ribbon cutting yesterday.
“The facility’s opening marks a major milestone for tennis enthusiasts and athletes of all ages, and excitingly, is now ready to host the Launceston International when it returns next month,” Duigan said.
“This … will be a facility for local tennis players and clubs, a hub for major tennis events as well as being a multipurpose sport and community space.”
Tennis Tasmania CEO Darren Sturgess said the new centre will provide a pathway for young players in the region.
“It’s been a long time coming, there’s been a lot of amazing people that have been involved in this journey for going on 10 plus years or so,” he said.
“It’s showing the pathway to our future players as well and giving them inspiration and something to strive for.”
The centre includes a main space with a kiosk and office areas, a community space and a viewing deck overlooking the entire precinct.
“It sets us on the journey and we’re really excited about the years to come as this whole precinct gets developed … where the second stage of this project will come to life,” Sturgess said.
The state government committed $2 million of the facility’s $3.5 million price tag.
