Launceston council approves $130 million UTAS Stadium transformation

A major transformation is set to revitalise Northern Tasmania’s premier sporting venue after Launceston Council formally approved a $130 million redevelopment of UTAS Stadium.

The approval means UTAS Stadium will now undergo extensive upgrades to meet Australian Tier 2 guidelines.

City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood described the approval as a “game-changer” for the region.

“This redevelopment cements UTAS Stadium’s position as northern Tasmania’s hub for sport, entertainment, and community events,” Garwood said.

“It will deliver state-of-the-art facilities for athletes, spectators, and attendees, while boosting local tourism and economic activity.”

The project includes construction of a new Centre West Stand, additional seating in the Western Stand, and a completely redeveloped Eastern Stand.

Spectators will enjoy improved food and beverage outlets at the stadium

Spectators will benefit from improved food and beverage outlets, enhanced pedestrian access, modern corporate spaces, and upgraded amenities throughout the venue.

Stadiums Tasmania Chief Executive Officer James Avery welcomed the approval as an important step forward.

“The $130 million redevelopment of the venue will ensure the ongoing attraction of marquee events, while providing community users with an elevated event-day experience,” Avery said.

Beyond the visible improvements, the project addresses critical infrastructure needs including new lighting, water, sewer and stormwater systems to meet modern operational standards.

The council has imposed conditions for the reuse of timber from a Dutch elm tree that must be removed, requiring four new trees to be planted enhance.

A photographic record of the removed tree will be archived, and developers must present a timber reuse plan within three months of its removal.
