A suspicious package at the Launceston Cup today turned out to be nothing more than a discarded e-bike battery, police have confirmed.
Tasmania Police received reports of a “suspicious article” at the Mowbray racecourse shortly after 8:30am this morning, two hours before formalities were set to begin.
Police officers and Tasmania Fire Service crews responded to the scene as thousands of racegoers prepared to gather for the annual event.
“Police along with members of Tasmania Fire Service responded and it was quickly determined the item was a discarded e-bike battery and there was no risk to the public,” a Tasmania Police spokesperson told Pulse.

The battery was safely disposed of and the site was cleared by 9:45am, allowing the racing carnival to continue without disruption.
