A 34-year-old man has been arrested after a house fire in Launceston’s northern suburbs early this morning.
Emergency services were called to George Town Road in Newnham just after midnight following reports of a structure fire.
Tasmania Fire Service crews from Rocherlea and Lillydale arrived to find the house “burning freely”.
Multiple fire crews worked to contain and extinguish the blaze.
Police said they received several calls from members of the public who reported seeing a man running from the property around the same time.
The Launceston man was arrested after the fire was brought under control.
He remains in custody and is assisting police with their inquiries.
Tasmania Police have not revealed what charges, if any, the man may face.
The cause of the fire has not been confirmed, though the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.
It is not yet known whether anyone was inside the property at the time of the fire or the extent of the damage.
Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
Witnesses can contact police on 131 444 or provide anonymous information to Crime Stoppers.
