A Launceston man is in custody after allegedly slashing tyres on several vehicles with a knife in a midday rampage through Mowbray.

Police were called to Invermay Road about 12pm on Saturday following reports of a man damaging vehicle tyres before fleeing the scene.

Officers searched the area and took the 32-year-old man into custody a short time later.

Tasmania Police confirmed investigations are ongoing. They said at least eight vehicles were impacted.

Police are urging any affected vehicle owners who have not yet spoken with officers to come forward.
