One of Launceston’s most recognisable landmarks is getting a fresh new look, with the John Hart Conservatory in City Park closing from Monday for a full restoration.
The $1 million upgrade will help protect the historic building’s charm and structure, with plans to reopen the doors just in time for spring.
“The John Hart Conservatory has been an integral part of City Park for almost 100 years,” Mayor Matthew Garwood said.
“This extensive restoration project is an investment in ensuring its future for Launceston residents and visitors.”

Built in 1933 to replace an earlier 19th-century building, the conservatory was partly funded through a bequest from John Hart’s estate.
The project, designed by CMK Architects and carried out by Fairbrother, includes stabilising the foundations, strengthening the structure, replacing the roof and glass and improving drainage.

Crews will also carry out masonry repairs, improve ventilation and guttering, upgrade the lighting and refresh the surrounding garden areas.
Construction fencing will go up in the coming weeks, with weekday works and extra vehicle movement expected in and around the park during the restoration.
“From structural reinforcements to energy-efficient lighting, every element of this project has been carefully considered to ensure the conservatory remains a beautiful and functional space for years to come,” Garwood said.
