A former pizza restaurant in Tasmania’s north is likely to be transformed into a new Nando’s outlet, if plans lodged with the Launceston City Council get the go ahead.

What was once the Pizza Capers building on the corner of Brisbane and Wellington Streets will undergo a major makeover to become a two-storey Nando’s restaurant with a ‘distinctive South African vibe’.

Designs detailing the transformation include a dedicated dining area on the previously empty top floor, providing space for over 90 patrons.

The business would employ over 40 locals and is hoped to be up and running before Christmas.

The Art Deco building dates back to 1939 and has previously been home to the Tasmanian Tyre Service, Pizza Hut, Red Herring and most recently Pizza Capers.

Nando’s currently has two stores in Hobart, one in Rosny and another in North Hobart.

The development application and plans are currently on display with the City of Launceston until July.
