Tasmania’s Central Highlands has shivered through the coldest night of the year so far, with Liawenee plunging to -3.0 degrees on Monday morning.
Bureau of Meteorology data shows that the remote weather station’s February record is even lower at -3.6 degrees, set in 2019.
The icy conditions followed a weekend of snow across elevated areas of the state, as temperatures took a sharp dive from the recent heatwave.
Weatherzone reported that southeastern Australia as a whole experienced an unseasonably strong chill, along with a noticeable drop in humidity.
This, the forecaster said, made the crisp, dry air feel even more brisk.

For most of the state, temperatures are expected to hover around 20 degrees this week before warming up again and hitting the thirties over the weekend.
Hobart is forecast to reach 30 degrees on Saturday, while Launceston is set to top 31 degrees.
On the north-west coast, temperatures will peak at 25 degrees on Saturday, with the east coast reaching 26 degrees.
