The Liberals have promised to extend half-price bus fares for another 12 months if re-elected, continuing a popular measure that has already seen millions of discounted journeys across the state.

Transport Minister Eric Abetz announced the extension would run until 30 June 2026, covering all passengers on urban routes, regional and rural services, and the Derwent River ferry.

“We recognise that many Tasmanians are doing it tough, which is why we’re making it more affordable to get to work, school, appointments, or just get out and about,” Abetz said.

5.8 million discounted journeys have been recorded on Metro buses, student services and the Derwent Ferry.

Regional routes have experienced passenger growth of up to 18% as travellers take advantage of significant savings.

A return trip from Huonville to Hobart now costs $8.80 instead of $17.60, while passengers travelling from Smithton to Burnie save $16 on a return journey.

In northern Tasmania, the return fare between Scottsdale and Launceston has been halved from $22.80 to $11.40.
