Launceston will celebrate the launch of its own Monopoly edition with a life-size board game display at Cataract Gorge Reserve on March 25.

The event will mark the release of the Launceston-themed version of the world-famous board game, with locals invited to check out the giant board and take part in the festivities.

The unveiling will also feature an appearance by the iconic Mr Monopoly character.

Launceston is the second Tasmanian city to receive its own Monopoly edition, following the launch of the Hobart version in 2021.

“We’re thrilled to be unveiling the local addition for the very first time to the local community with a life-size Launceston Monopoly Board revealed by Mr Monopoly himself,” a spokesperson said.

Local landmarks have replaced traditional London properties, with Cataract Gorge, the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, City Park and the Tamar Valley wine region set to feature on the board.

At the time it was announced in May last year, Mayor Matthew Garwood said it was a unique opportunity to showcase the city.

“This is a really exciting opportunity for Launceston to be showcased as the second region here in Tassie to have its own Monopoly board,” he said.

Monopoly representative Jaime-Lee de Niet said the company was excited to return to Tasmania.

“It’s been a few years since we launched a Tasmania regional board and we’re thrilled to be back in this beautiful state,” she said.

“From Boag’s Brewery and City Park to iconic events like Festivale, we can’t wait to see what the community wants to feature on the board.”

The Hobart edition currently sells for around $70 and includes local spots like Battery Point and Kunanyi/Mount Wellington.
