Burnie’s airport terminal has been compared to a medical waiting room by councillors who have unanimously voted to push to give the facility a long-overdue makeover.
The airport, part-owned by the Burnie City Council, currently features bare white walls and little to welcome visitors or showcase the region’s attractions.
Councillor Justin Grave, who proposed the motion, was blunt when describing the terminal’s condition at Tuesday’s council meeting.
“Anyone who’s flown in there lately, it sort of reminds you of a dentist waiting room or a doctor’s waiting room,” he said.

“It’s [got] fairly white walls, no artwork on the walls, no tourist information.”
Council voted unanimously this week to add displays and features highlighting Burnie’s attractions.

“We’ve got so many great things to show off here in Burnie … let’s get some artwork, let’s get some pictures, let’s get some information about these things over to the airport,” Grave said.
“We’re not going to make it JFK or Heathrow. It’s still going to be a regional airport, but I just want people who fly into Burnie to feel that it is Burnie.”
The push already has support from key airport stakeholders who met last week to brainstorm ideas.
The council will now await a report outlining design options, costs and a timeline for the terminal’s transformation.
