The West Coast community has thanked some ‘local legends’ who made sure volunteer firefighters in Queenstown were fed as they tackled a nearby blaze.

Queenstown’s Green’s General Store donated five large pizzas to the fire crew at the Queenstown Fire Brigade on Wednesday afternoon.

The store said they wanted to make sure the people keeping the town save were looked after.

The bushfire burning in the hills behind Queenstown was reported to emergency services at around 1:50am on Wednesday.

TFS Acting District Officer Peter Bradow said aerial resources joined firefighters from Queenstown, Zeehan, Strahan and Rosebery in efforts to contain the blaze.

The fire was previously the subject of a ‘watch and act’ warning, which has since been downgraded.

Bradow urged residents near the fire to stay informed and monitor official warnings.

“We’re asking residents in the area to monitor conditions, be aware of ember attacks and if they haven’t already, review their bushfire plan,” he said.
