UPDATED:The driver of mini involved in a head on crash with a log truck is believed to have been driving on the wrong side of the road.
Police have launched an investigation into the serious crash, which occurred on Tea Tree Road shortly before 12pm today.
A spokesperson said initial inquiries suggest a Mini F56 hatch crossed to the incorrect side of the road and collided head on with the truck, which was travelling in the opposite direction.
“The impact caused significant frontal damage to the car, and the truck flipped on to its side, completely blocking the roadway,” they said.
The ‘fully loaded’ truck was transporting about 29 tonnes of timber logs at the time, which were left covering the road as a result of the smash.
The driver of the Mini, a man in his 50s from Austins Ferry, was airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries.
His passenger was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The truck driver, a man in his 30s from Sorell, was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing and police urge anyone with information to contact Bridgewater Police on 131 444.
Tea Tree Road remains closed while the scene is cleared, with motorists asked to avoid the area until further notice.
EARLIER: A road in Hobart’s northern suburbs has been closed after a crash between a log truck and a car this afternoon.
Police say the truck is currently blocking Tea Tree Road between Colebrook and Middle Tea Tree Road, with the level of injury not yet known.
The road will remain closed for several hours while the scene is cleared.
Pulse understands the Westpac Rescue Helicopter has been dispatched to the scene.
