A bushwalker who became disoriented on a remote track near Ben Lomond has been rescued after running out of supplies.

The 59-year-old man from northern Tasmania called emergency services about 1:55pm on Sunday after losing his way on Ragged Jack Track.

Police search and rescue teams gave him initial guidance over the phone before heading to the area.

He was found safe roughly three hours later. Although he was dressed appropriately for the conditions, he had no food or water.

Tasmania Police are reminding bushwalkers not to head out alone and to always carry enough supplies.

“The man, who was wearing appropriate gear however had run out of water and food, was returned to safety about 5pm,” police said.

Officers say proper preparation is essential, including carrying maps, torches, suitable clothing for the weather and waterproof jackets year-round.

“Research your intended trip – ensure the trip is within your abilities and fitness level and you have a route plan, map and check the expected weather forecast,” they said.

Bushwalkers are also encouraged to let someone know their planned route and when they expect to return.

“Be flexible. Be prepared to turn back or change plans if severe weather is forecast or eventuates during the walk,” police said.

“Making the decision to push on when you should turn back can put you in danger.”
