A motorcyclist who died after crashing into a chain blocking the exit of a New Norfolk sports bar carpark was riding while “significantly intoxicated” and without a licence, a coroner has found.

Leigh Pearce, 43, was travelling at an “excessive speed” of at least 40km/h down a gravel road outside the Valley Sports Bar when he failed to see the “clearly visible” metal link chain on September 19, 2023.

Coroner Olivia McTaggart said the impact “catapulted” Pearce into the air and his helmet, the chin strap of which had reportedly been cut off, came loose from his head.

She said it was likely that Pearce’s blood alcohol level of around 0.140, or 2.8 times the legal limit, as a result of drinking throughout the day, was the main reason for the crash.

The investigation found Pearce did not have a motorcycle licence but held a full medium rigid licence and worked as a forklift driver.

McTaggart said Pearce had ridden motorcycles throughout his life and ruled out any mechanical issues with the bike.

“Unfortunately, Mr Pearce could not be revived due to suffering multiple and severe chest injuries,” she said.

“Mr Pearce, who was significantly intoxicated, was the sole cause of his fatal crash. I am satisfied that there are no other contributing factors in his death.”
