A crash in Longford in the early hours of this morning involved a taxi carrying three passengers, Police have revealed.
The passengers were rushed to Launceston General Hospital, where they are being cared for by medical professionals.
One of the passengers, a 32-year-old woman from Summerhill, remains in critical condition.
The other two – a 29-year-old and 31-year-old woman both from Longford – are in a serious but stable condition.
The taxi driver, a 53-year-old man, has been released from the hospital after only sustaining minor injuries and undergoing mandatory drug and alcohol testing.
According to Police Acting Inspector Stuart Greenwood, the taxi had crossed to the wrong side of the road, traveled 60m off-road down an embankment, and eventually hit a tree.
Crash investigation services are currently investigating the incident to determine the cause of the crash.
“I will remind people that serious and fatal crashes in Australia have five contributing factors: speed, inattention, fatigue, alcohol and drugs, and wearing a seatbelt,” he said.
“All of these combined determine the seriousness of injuries or otherwise from a fatal crash. And they will also be looked at quite closely by investigators.”
Police will determine if the passengers were wearing seatbelts in the crash.
