A free cancer support program is calling for volunteers in Launceston to help run workshops that boost the confidence of people going through treatment.

Look Good Feel Better, run by the Cancer Patients Foundation, teaches cancer patients practical ways to manage the appearance-related side effects of treatment, from skin changes to hair loss.

The program has been running workshops in Launceston since 1997 and is now in its 36th year nationally.

The workshops also give participants a chance to meet others going through a similar experience, often forming friendships and support networks along the way.

Lynne Walter of Launceston has been volunteering with the program for 16 years.

“I really enjoy how the Look Good Feel Better workshops help participants realise that there are people willing to listen and help them,” Walter said.

“That at the end of the day, they are not alone in this.”

“These workshops teach participants ways they can take back control and help them look like themselves again.”

Walter said participants “light up at the Look Good Feel Better workshops”.

“They come in very protective and weary but at the end, they come out laughing and smiling,” she said.

The program receives no government funding and relies on sponsors

“We absolutely need more volunteers in Launceston to help us keep supporting and reaching out to people undergoing cancer treatment.”

The program receives no government funding and depends on corporate and community sponsors.
