Madeleine Wilson has been appointed as a permanent magistrate in Tasmania, replacing Simon Cooper after more than a decade on the bench.
She brings nearly 30 years of criminal law experience to the role, having served as Crown Counsel with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) since 1999.
Before joining the DPP, Wilson worked as a criminal defence lawyer for three years.
Attorney-General Guy Barnett said Wilson was “widely recognised for her legal expertise, integrity and leadership”.
“Her extensive experience includes appearances in both the magistrates and supreme courts, as well as service on the guardianship and administration board,” he said.
“She has a proven track record of excellence in criminal law, sound judgment and the personal qualities required of a magistrate.”
Wilson has previously served as assistant director at the DPP and led the office’s child sexual assault prosecution unit.
Barnett thanked outgoing Magistrate Simon Cooper for his “dedication to the Tasmanian people” following his resignation.
“… I wish him all the best on his future endeavours,” he said.
Cooper was appointed to the Magistrates Court in 2013 and also served as a coroner during his time on the bench.
Before becoming a magistrate, Cooper served as chair of the Parole Board and as executive commissioner of the Resource Planning and Development Commission.
