A magnitude 3.2 earthquake struck off the West Coast of Tasmania overnight.

The earthquake occurred west of Arthur River around 12:50am at a depth of 10km, but social media users on the West Coast say they ‘slept right through it’.

The quake created tremor waves which were picked up by seismographs across the state, including in Lilydale near Launceston and at Taroona High School near Hobart.

A seismograph 640km away at Mila in New South Wales also detected the tremor.

While earthquakes occur in waters off Tasmania’s coasts from time to time, quakes are rare on-land in Tasmania.

There have been just 11 earthquakes recorded on-land in Tasmania over the last 45 years.

Most notably, a magnitude 2.2 earthquake in Northern Tasmania triggered an underground rockfall at the Beaconsfield gold mine, which saw 3 miners trapped underground for six days.
