Tasmanians celebrating the arrival of 2026 will have a safe way home with MAIB Nightrider bus services operating across the state’s three major cities.
Metro Tasmania and the Motor Accidents Insurance Board have confirmed the special services will run in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie from 7pm on December 31.
Party-goers can also take advantage of half-price fares on all Metro services throughout New Year’s Eve.
MAIB Chief Executive Officer Paul Kingston said the initiative is part of the organisation’s broader road safety strategy.

“Preventing death and serious injury on Tasmania’s roads is a critical priority for the MAIB,” Kingston said.
“The MAIB Nightrider service provides a safe, affordable and accessible way for people to get home after a night of celebrations, without getting behind the wheel.”

Kingston urged revellers to plan their evening transportation in advance.
“If you’re going to drink, plan ahead and leave the driving to someone else,” he said.
The New Year’s Eve initiative follows Metro’s earlier announcement of free travel across its network on Christmas Day.
Tasmania Police will maintain a visible presence throughout the festive period, working closely with Metro at public transport hubs and across entertainment districts.

Customers can access timetable information and plan their journey using the Metro Trip Planner or by visiting the Metro website.
The MAIB Nightrider services will operate as additional routes to regular Metro schedules, with detailed information available at metrotas.com.au.
