Construction has begun on the main part of the $130 million redevelopment of UTAS Stadium (York Park) in Launceston, setting the stage for Tasmania’s historic entry into the AFL and AFLW.

The project, jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments contributing $65 million each, is hoped to transform the Launceston venue into a world-class facility.

Tasmanian construction firm Fairbrother has been awarded the contract to undertake the extensive works, which include a new Centre West Stand, redeveloped Eastern Stand, and improved patron amenities.

Stadiums Tasmania CEO James Avery said the milestone marks the beginning of the most substantial phase of the redevelopment.

“It ensures the project remains on time and on budget, while delivering a venue that meets the needs of elite sport, community users and fans,” Avery said.

The stadium’s capacity will temporarily reduce to approximately 9,000 during the 2026 AFL season before increasing to around 17,000 in 2027 as new seating areas become available.

Throughout construction, the stadium will continue to host major sporting events, including AFLW matches, Hawthorn Football Club home games and Tasmania Football Club VFL fixtures.

Fairbrother Chairman Craig Edmunds said he was proud in his company’s involvement in the redevelopment.

“[It is] a project that will create local jobs, boost regional economic activity and highlight Northern Tasmania’s construction capability,” Edmunds said.

“This redevelopment is a fantastic opportunity for our people, our subcontractors and suppliers to deliver a rewarding and challenging project while contributing to a landmark Tasmanian venue.”
