A man accused of hijacking a vehicle at knifepoint and forcing its occupants to drive him across Launceston overnight has been arrested.

Police say the victims were in their stationary car on Invermay Road in Mowbray on Thursday evening when the man allegedly threatened them with a small knife.

He got into their car around 9pm and had the pair take him about five minutes away to a property on George Town Road.

After the suspect left the vehicle, police quickly tracked him to a residence in Mayfield where they made an arrest.

The 32-year-old man has been charged with trespass, assault and possession of a dangerous article.

Though both victims would have been left shaken by the traumatic incident, police said neither suffered physical injuries.

The man will appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court in April.
