A man allegedly drove against traffic on the Bridgewater Bridge, crashed into multiple vehicles and attempted to carjack a woman during a police incident across Hobart’s northern suburbs on Thursday.

Police said they had initially wanted to question the man over “unresolved matters in the Bridgewater area” when he allegedly evaded officers in a stolen vehicle in the Molesworth area.

He then allegedly drove dangerously through Glenorchy, Bridgewater, Brighton and New Norfolk between 4pm and 5:15pm.

At one point, he allegedly drove against the flow of traffic while crossing the Bridgewater Bridge.

The incident ended on the Lyell Highway at Lawitta, where he allegedly tried to steal a car while a woman was still inside.

The woman was not known to the man and was not physically injured, police said.

A police vehicle was damaged during the initial encounter at Molesworth.

No other injuries were reported and investigations are continuing, police said.

Tasmania Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incidents or has dashcam or CCTV footage of a Mazda BT50 being driven erratically in the Glenorchy, Bridgewater and Derwent Valley areas to come forward.

Anyone with information can contact police on 131 444 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
