Man allegedly escapes police custody and evades officers in Tasmania’s north-west

A man who allegedly escaped police custody and fled from officers has been arrested after a dramatic ordeal in Tasmania’s north-west.

The 46-year-old north-west man was taken into custody around 8:05pm on Friday near Staverton Road at Promised Land in the Lake Barrington area.

Police have charged the man with escaping police custody, evading police, assault and traffic offences.

“No one was injured during the incident,” a police spokesperson said.

Police did not reveal that the man had escaped for over 19 hours, remaining tight-lipped and refusing to answer questions about the details of the operation.

Officers had initially advised the public that there was “no threat to the community”, saying the man was “wanted in relation to several outstanding matters”.

They later acknowledged that the man had escaped from their custody around 3pm today, following repeated inquiries from Pulse.

A Tasmania Police spokesperson said the man was seen in a brown Mazda 3, with the incident occurring “in a remote area of the Lake Barrington campground”.

The man was detained overnight and appeared before the Devonport Magistrates Court this morning, where he was remanded in custody to reappear via video link on Monday afternoon.
