A man has been arrested after an “isolated incident” that prompted the deployment of a specialised Tasmania Police task force to the state’s north-west.

The Special Operations Group and their rarely-seen Bearcat were observed traveling north from Hobart under lights and sirens by several members of the public shortly after 11am on Saturday.

Their destination was nearly 300km away at a private residence in Gawler, south of Ulverstone.

Police said officers were called to the address due to “concerns for the welfare of a man” at the home.

Despite the use of the Special Operations Group, which was turned around before reaching Gawler, police confirmed that there was “no threat to the wider community” and no one was “physically injured”.

The man was taken into custody “without incident” almost three hours later at 2:40pm.

“Police would like to thank the community for their patience while emergency services responded to the incident,” a spokesperson said.

No charges have been laid at this stage.
