Man charged after allegedly pulling knife at Launceston Christmas carols

A man has been charged after allegedly pulling a 30-centimetre knife in front of families at a popular Christmas carols event in northern Tasmania.

The 48-year-old from Kings Meadows was arrested at City Park in Launceston around 5:45pm on Sunday.

Police allege he produced the black-handled blade while sitting among a large crowd near the stage.

Witnesses noticed the weapon and quickly moved away from the area, police said.

Officers took the man into custody “without further incident”.

He has been charged with being unlawfully armed in public.

No one was injured and police said there was no ongoing threat to those attending the event.

The man is expected to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Monday.
