Man charged over deliberate fire in Burnie hotel room

A young Devonport man has been charged with arson after allegedly starting a fire in a hotel room that forced the evacuation of guests in Burnie.

Police allege the 26-year-old deliberately lit the fire at about 1:30am on Wednesday in a room at the Wilson Street building.

The blaze triggered an evacuation of the hotel’s second floor.

No injuries were reported among guests or staff, police said.

Tasmania Fire Service crews attended the scene and extinguished the fire before it could spread further through the building.

Following investigation by authorities, the man was taken into custody and charged with multiple offences including arson and unlawfully setting fire to property.

He has been detained to appear before the Burnie Magistrates Court.
