A man has been charged with manslaughter after the death of a young child in Smithton.
Tasmania Police Western CIB detectives are investigating the incident after hospital staff reported the 4-year-old child’s death around 10:15pm on Friday, May 31.

Police say a 35-year-old man from North West Tasmania known to the child was arrested and charged overnight.
“He has been held in custody to appear in an out-of-hours court session at the Burnie Magistrates Court on Sunday morning,” a spokesperson said.
A 30-year-old woman from the North- West who was “well known to the child” is also facing charges.
She has been charged with ill-treating a child and has been bailed to appear in court at a later date.
