A man accused of murdering a Tasmania Police officer will undergo a professional assessment before his case moves forward, a court has heard.
Leigh Geoffrey Sushames, 46, appeared via video link at Launceston Magistrates Court on Friday but did not enter pleas to charges including the murder of Constable Keith Smith.
Defence barrister Greg Richardson told the court an assessment was needed before the matter could proceed.
He said he had contacted a professional the day before but did not specify what kind of evaluation would take place.

Sushames is facing charges of murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault over the June 16 shooting at his North Motton property.
Police had gone to the property to serve a court-ordered repossession notice when the incident unfolded.

Constable Smith, 57, died at the scene.
The shooting was Tasmania’s first fatal police shooting in more than a century.
The case was adjourned to the Launceston Magistrates Court on September 22 at 9:15am.
