A 59-year-old man has died after his car crashed into a power pole on the Channel Highway at Randalls Bay, south of Cygnet, on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the man was driving a silver Ford Falcon between Randalls Bay Road and Lowes Road about 4pm when he lost control and hit the pole.

Two passengers in the car suffered minor injuries, police said. The driver passed away in hospital.

The crash cut electricity to around 650 homes across the Huon Valley, including Abels Bay, Charlotte Cove, Cygnet, Deep Bay, Eggs and Bacon Bay, Garden Island Creek, Randalls Bay and Verona Sands.

The fallen pole blocked both lanes of the highway for several hours while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Police say a report will be prepared for the coroner.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones and a report will be prepared for the coroner,” a spokesperson said.

“Anyone with information or relevant dash cam footage is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers.”
