A Hobart man is facing multiple charges after an extensive police operation that tracked him from southern Tasmania to Launceston last week.

The 37-year-old from Claremont, previously described as a “person of interest” in the unfolding investigation, was taken into custody in Mayfield on Friday afternoon.

Pulse understands the Special Operations Group (SOG) – supported by the Bearcat armoured vehicle – was called in as part of a targeted effort to arrest the man.

The police helicopter joined the search in its final stages, tracking the suspect from Cressy through Longford to Illawarra Road before following him onto the Bass Highway.

The man appeared in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Saturday, charged with assault, evading police in aggravated circumstances and two counts of driving while suspended.

He also faces charges of dishonestly altering a number plate to deceive police, five counts of breaching bail and breaching a police family violence order.

“He is assisting police with their inquiries,” police said following his Friday arrest.

“There was no threat to the wider community. Police would like to thank members of the public for their understanding during the operation.”
