'Altercation with the driver': Man fighting for life after hit-and-run crash in northern Tasmania

A man remains in a critical but stable condition after being struck by a car following an “altercation” in northern Tasmania this morning.

Police said the injured man was involved in “an altercation with the driver” moments before the crash on Rowella Road in Kayena, about 35 kilometres north of Launceston.

Emergency services were called to the scene just before 8am on Wednesday.

The driver initially fled the scene but the vehicle was located nearby a short time later.

Police said the driver contacted them and was taken into custody “for the purpose of mandatory blood testing”.

The driver was not physically injured and is continuing to assist police with their inquiries, a spokesperson said.

The victim was rushed to Launceston General Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Crash investigators remain at the scene.
