A young man has been slapped with fines totalling more than $3,000 after defacing a historic train carriage with graffiti in the state’s south.

The 22-year-old from West Hobart was identified by police following an investigation into graffiti found on the Margate Train earlier this month.

Kingston Police also linked the man to similar offences in Glenorchy and New Norfolk.

As a result, he was fined $1,010 for the Margate Train incident and $2,020 for the other offences.

Staff at the Margate Train previously told Pulse the graffiti would “cost so much money to clean up”.

“It wasn’t just one carriage, it was two carriages. And there’s a lot of locals down here that are pretty upset behind it,” they said.
