Man in his 60s dies during swimming leg of Coles Bay Triathlon

A man competing in the Coles Bay Triathlon has died while swimming during the event.

The man, in his 60s, passed away at Muirs Beach in Coles Bay around 10am on Saturday.

Police said he was from Launceston and was taking part in the swimming leg of the triathlon when the incident happened.

“He was known to be a strong swimmer and investigations are continuing into the cause of death,” police said.

In a statement, Coles Bay Triathlon organisers said they were “deeply saddened” by the passing.

“Despite the immediate response of our water safety and medical teams, they were unable to be revived,” they said.

“Our thoughts are with their family, friends, and all those affected. Out of respect for their loved ones, we will not be commenting further.”

“Safety remains our highest priority and we are working closely with the relevant authorities.”

The event on Tasmania’s east coast is described as being the “most beautiful triathlon in Australia”.

It features a 1.9km swim, 9km bike ride and 21.1km run in the Freycinet National Park.
