Two people heading out for a morning on the water have helped save a man’s life after finding him stranded in the ocean off Tasmania’s north-west coast.
The 74-year-old was pulled from the water about one kilometre from the mouth of the Leven River at West Ulverstone on Wednesday morning.
Police and emergency services were called about 6:35am after reports of an unmanned boat drifting near the Tasma Parade boat ramp.
The two members of the public had arrived at the ramp for a planned fishing trip when they noticed the empty vessel.
After launching their own boat, they began searching the area and soon located the man in the water.

Marine Rescue Ulverstone provided first aid until paramedics arrived.
The man was taken to North West Regional Hospital in a stable condition, where he is being treated for hypothermia.
Tasmania Police Acting Inspector Matthew Knight praised those who helped.
“Thanks to the swift actions of members of the public, the man was successfully rescued,” he said.
“I would like to thank everyone who assisted at the scene – their timely intervention and willingness to help ensured a positive outcome in what was a dangerous situation.”
It remains unclear how the man ended up in the water or how long he had been there before being found.
Police have issued a reminder to boaters about safety precautions as the summer season continues.
They urged people to check weather forecasts before heading out, ensure vessels carry required safety equipment, including EPIRBs and VHF radios and always tell someone their plans.
