A 44-year-old man is in a serious condition after his vehicle crashed into the Dasher River in Tasmania’s north yesterday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 4:30pm on Bridle Track Road at Stoodley, when the man’s green BMW sedan lost control and rolled into the water.
Police have revealed they had “detected the same vehicle travelling above the posted speed limit” shortly before the crash.
A spokesperson said officers were in the process of turning around to intercept the car at the time.
“The police vehicle’s emergency warning devices were activated whilst trying to find the vehicle,” a spokesperson said.
“Police did not locate the vehicle and shortly thereafter were notified it had crashed.”
Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle lose control before rolling into the river.
Tasmania Police have launched a professional standards investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Bridle Track Road has been closed to all traffic this morning while police continue their on-scene investigations.
“Police are calling for witnesses to the crash or any person who observed the vehicle’s manner of driving to come forward,” the spokesperson added.
The driver was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash and was airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital.
