Police have confirmed the man who drowned at Carlton Beach east of Hobart on Sunday was the father of the children he was trying to save.
Emergency services were called to Carlton Beach just before 1pm on Sunday after receiving reports of five swimmers, including four children, struggling in strong currents.
It is understood the four young children were taken ashore by Surf Life Saving volunteers while the man remained in the water.
Surf Life Saving then returned to take the 38-year-old man.
“I understand that he was actually conscious when he was put in the boat, but unfortunately then became unconscious and CPR commenced at that point,” Tasmania Police Inspector Darren Latham said.
From there, I understand paramedics then attended and continued CPR and unfortunately he passed away at the scene.”
The children did not require medical treatment.
A police spokesperson said no further details would be provided.
“Out of respect for the family, and as the matter is now a matter for the coroner it isn’t appropriate to provide any further information.”
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
