Construction has commenced on a new 24-metre heavy mooring work vessel for a Tasmanian salmon company.
Huon Aquaculture and local engineering firm Crisp Bros. & Haywards officially began the project with a keel laying ceremony at the firm’s Margate facility this week.
The vessel is the first stage of a $20 million investment by Huon Aquaculture, which includes plans for two work vessels and a new feed barge.
Designed to handle challenging marine environments, the vessel will enhance Huon’s operational capabilities across its marine sites when delivered in early 2027.

“Our partnership with Crisp Bros. & Haywards spans more than a decade and has delivered some of the most advanced aquaculture vessels in the Southern Hemisphere,” said Charles Von Der Heyde, CEO of Huon Aquaculture.
“This new build is another step forward in ensuring our teams have the best tools to work safely and efficiently.”

A spokesperson from the engineering firm said the project will have broad-ranging economic benefits.
“We’re proud to once again partner with Huon Aquaculture on a project that showcases Tasmanian engineering and craftsmanship,” they said.
“Every vessel we build here supports local jobs and strengthens our regional economy.”
