Mayor Michelle Dracoulis of the Derwent Valley has slammed flower thieves who have cleaned out public flowerbeds at Arthur Square in New Norfolk “two weeks in a row”.

Locals have reportedly witnessed people stealing “armfuls of flowers” from the town square and have been met with lies when confronted, with thieves claiming they “had permission”.

“No such permission has or ever will be granted,” Dracoulis said.

“The only people who have rights to remove plants or flowers from Arthur Square are council staff.”

One resident was praised by the mayor for their quick thinking after they snapped a photo of a “getaway car” involved in this week’s theft.

Details of the vehicle and its occupants were reported to Tasmania Police.

“To anyone who thinks they can steal from our community, think again,” Dracoulis said.

“We stand together and you will be caught.”
