“Simply fantastic” is how the Mayor of Brighton has described the $10.5 million fund allocated to construct critical infrastructure announced by the Prime Minister today.
The funds pave the way for the development of 600 new homes around the new Brighton High School.
“It’s something that we’ve worked very, very hard on over the last five years,” Mayor Leigh Gray said.
“It is a shovel ready project that the Federal Government has given this grant to us to undertake.”

The project includes the construction of a new sewer pump station, upgrades to Brighton Road, Dylan Street and William Street, as well as over a kilometre of shared pathways connecting the township to the industrial hub.
“Brighton is still growing. We’re a population of just over 20,000 now. To have 600 more houses is just [going] to add to that,” Gray said.

“We have taken a low-density area on the edge of town and have master planned it to equitably turn it into a new urban precinct around the new high school and growing commercial centre.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the funding is part of Round Two of a national housing infrastructure program.
“This $10 million will unlock the development that is needed to build 600 new homes here in this bright and industrial precinct, providing for those essential services that are the key to homes being built here,” he said.
“We’re investing real dollars in real infrastructure to build real homes to help families here in Tasmania.”

The infrastructure project is expected to be completed by early 2026.
