It’s the end of an era for Hobart’s McCann’s Music Centre as their Elizabeth Street shopfront gets cleared out for good after an impressive 88-year stint.
The iconic instrument dealer has called the corner of Elizabeth and Melville Streets home since 1935, with its roots dating back to 1881 when it was initially established and located up the road.
Third-generation owner Geoff McCann, who is now 74, began working at the store full-time in 1965.
However, earlier this year he made the difficult decision to close the shop “as there were no other family members wanting to continue it”.
“Whilst I am in good health, I feel that now is the right time to end what has been a wonderful music legacy,” McCann said.
“A huge thank you goes out not only to our loyal customers over the last 142 years, but also to the Tasmanian public for supporting us every step of the way in our goal of providing musicians with the service and tools they need to perform their magic on stages around the world.”
The 730 sqm ground floor of the 1920s-built building in the heart of the city is now available for lease through Devine Property.
The remaining stock in the store is currently being sold in a closing-down sale before new tenants take over in January 2024.
