Metro Tasmania bus drivers have been told to hide their cash trays and stop collecting fares at the Glenorchy bus mall following a string of thefts.
The “temporary safety measures” were introduced this week after a series of coin thefts in the area prompted a police investigation.
Since Wednesday, drivers working the 4pm to 8pm shift must remove their cash trays before entering the mall and store them out of sight.
They have also been instructed not to collect fares during the four-hour window, with trips instead being recorded as free travel.

“Due to the ongoing incidents in the Glenorchy bus mall, Metro will be enacting control measures, taking the following steps to ensure the safety of our operators,” a safety alert seen by Pulse reads.
A Metro spokesperson said the operator is continuing to work closely with police to resolve the issue.

“The decision was made for the safety of Metro drivers after a number of attempted thefts,” they said.
Tasmania Police told Pulse officers are investigating reports of two young people “allegedly stealing coins as they have exited Metro buses” recently.
“A 13-year-old was charged in relation to the incidents [on Wednesday],” the spokesperson said.
“Police are following a specific line of enquiry in relation to the second youth allegedly involved.”
The free-fare measure will remain in place until Sunday.

In March, the Rail, Tram and Bus Union instructed its drivers to refuse to collect fares from passengers at all stops due to safety concerns.
Updated 9am, Friday: Tasmania Police say the second youth allegedly involved has also been charged.
The 14-year-old is facing five stealing charges and one for damaging property.
Police said the young person will appear in court at a later date.
