Hobart’s CBD is now under the watchful eye of more CCTV cameras as the city attempts to curb incidents of vandalism and destructive behaviour.

Acting Lord Mayor Dr Zelinda Sherlock says the city, from Salamanca through to Elizabeth Street in North Hobart, is now a “safe corridor” covered by the increased surveillance.

“We expect this network to [act] as a deterrent for criminal activity and anti-social behaviour within the CBD,” she said.

“This advanced infrastructure will serve as a powerful tool in our efforts to … enhance public safety in the heart of Hobart.”

The council has installed a total of 83 fixed and two semi-permanent security cameras, which they say will also be used to provide data for future safety, security, city planning and operational decision-making.

North Hobart Traders Association President Lisa Martin said the always-on cameras are a welcome addition.

“Like many precincts in Hobart the North Hobart Traders have been the target of continual theft and undesirable behaviour,” she said.

“We are appreciative that these cameras … are now in operation and shall help to keep our customers, businesses, staff and community safe.”

Anti-social incidents are common in the CBD, particularly among young offenders, with a teenage girl recently arrested for assaulting two police officers and dozens more incidents reported during a Wellington Court safety operation last week.

“While police will continue to proactively patrol the Hobart area, CCTV plays a crucial role in enhancing public safety and deterring criminal activity,” Tasmania Police Inspector John Toohey said.

“As well as contributing to a safer environment for all members of the community, CCTV can provide valuable evidence for investigations and can help police monitor and respond to incidents.”
