The speed limit through a section of North Hobart’s ‘Restaurant Zone’ will drop by 10km/h from Monday.

The City of Hobart is extending the existing 40km/h zone about 150 metres south along Elizabeth Street to the Tasma Street intersection.

According to the council, the reduction from 50km/h will make the area home to some of the city’s most popular venues safer.

“This update will make the area a more comfortable place to visit and enjoy with friends and family,” the council said.

“With the holiday and celebration season upon us, we’re continuing to make Hobart’s streets a safer place to walk, drive, ride, shop and dine out.”

The wider CBD 40km/h zone was first introduced in 2021.

It has since been followed by other reductions in the Lenah Valley, Sandy Bay and New Town retail precincts.

The council says traffic modelling shows the impact on travel time through the CBD is “very minimal” as a result of the drops to 40km/h.
