More than 42,000 lightning strikes hit Tasmania during severe thunderstorms

Around 43,000 lightning strikes hit both inland and offshore Tasmania overnight as the Bureau of Meteorology issued severe thunderstorm warnings for much of the state.

According to the BOM, Hobart was drenched by 20mm of rain in a single hour overnight – recording a total of 40mm in the 24 hours until 9am on Sunday.

Mount Boomerang in the Huon Catchment recorded the highest rainfall in the gauges, with 55.2mm measured in the 24 hours to 9am Sunday.

Launceston copped 17mm of rain in the 24h to 9am, with only light falls about the northwest and Furneaux Islands and between 10 to 30mm recorded elsewhere.

The roof of a Hobart hotel also went up in flames during the storm around midnight, with 100 people forced to evacuate to nearby accommodation.

A tree in Kingston was also captured on camera being struck by lightning just before midnight, creating a spectacular display that illuminated the night sky.

Warnings for the severe thunderstorm were officially issued for the north of the state by the Bureau of Meteorology early in the evening, with a warning for the south following shortly after.

The BOM recorded 25.8mm at Mt Morriston in the 1 hour to 11:45pm overnight and 27.6mm at Strathgordon in the 2 hours to 10pm.

The State Emergency Service (SES) sent crews to around 20 requests for assistance overnight, mainly in the south-east of the state, for leaks and minor flooding.
