A man has been charged after allegedly recording a blood alcohol reading almost six times the legal limit on Tasmania’s east coast.

The 44-year-old from Orford was pulled over on the Tasman Highway about 4pm on Sunday after other motorists reported his ‘erratic’ driving.

He returned a breath test reading of 0.299, police said. The legal limit in Tasmania is 0.05.

The man was charged with exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit and driving under the influence.

He was immediately disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Hours later, emergency services were called to a car fire on Skyline Road at Beaumaris about 7:30pm.

Police allege the vehicle had been hooning in the area before it caught alight.

The driver, a 34-year-old man from Scamander, returned a reading of 0.155 – more than three times the legal limit.
