Police say the remains they found on a bush track near Nabowla last night have since been confirmed as human, and are believed to be that of Shyanne.

Northern District Commander Kate Chambers said forensic testing could take about a week to be completed.

“The conditions of those remains are as such that we will need to get them forensically examined,” Chambers said.

The Commander said the remains were located by a person on foot in the 160-strong search team on Wednesday.

She wouldn’t provide further details on how police were led to the man, or the remote bushland area on Bridport Back Road.

“Our investigators, and all those involved in this process so far, have worked tirelessly to try and find closure for Shyanne-Lee’s family and her loved ones, and we will continue those efforts until we are satisfied we have provided that closure.”

The man is currently being held in custody as investigations continue.

No charges have been laid at this stage.

Wednesday night: Remains found in search for missing Tasmanian teenager

Remains have been found in the search for missing Tasmanian teenager Shyanne-Lee Tatnell.

Northern District Commander Kate Chambers said the remains were located on a bush track during an extensive ground and air search this afternoon.

Chambers said while the remains have not yet been forensically confirmed, they are “believed to be human remains”.

A crime scene has been declared at a property in Scottsdale as well as section of bushland near Nabowla, with extensive forensic examinations currently underway.

“Police are following a specific line of inquiry, however no charges have been laid at this stage,” Commander Chambers said.

Shyanne-Lee was last seen on April 30 near the North Esk River on Henry Street in Launceston – a 50-minute drive from the search area.

Originally from Burnie, Tatnell was staying in youth accommodation in Launceston when she went missing.

“We have been in regular contact with Shyanne-Lee’s family throughout the investigative process, and have notified them about this latest development.”

“Our thoughts continue to be with them and Shyanne-Lee’s loved ones during this difficult time.”
