NASA has released an image of a large phytoplankton bloom in the waters of the Bass Strait.
The photo was taken in November last year by the PACE spacecraft, which orbits Earth at an altitude of approximately 676km.

According to NASA, the Ocean Colour Instrument (OCI) sensor onboard the spacecraft detected the bloom.
“Phytoplankton is blooming in the … Bass Strait. The region is known for its turbulent waters and harbours numerous shipwrecks,” NASA Ocean shared online.

Phytoplankton are tiny marine algae that play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
They are also a vital food source for many marine species.
