Neil the Seal has once again returned to the shores of Tasmania’s south, with authorities keeping a close watch on the endangered southern elephant seal.

In recent days, Neil has been spotted lounging in the middle of roads on the Tasman Peninsula, causing some disruptions for local drivers and residents.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Marine Conservation Program is working with police and local authorities to ensure the seal’s wellbeing and safety.

They are urging people who happen to come across the mammal to keep their distance.

“People ‘visiting’ this seal creates safety risks for the seal and humans, can cause traffic issues, disrupt nearby residents and affect the seal’s long-term behaviour and survival,” a spokesperson said.

“Anyone who comes across the seal should stay at least 20m away and keep dogs leashed and at least 50m away.”

They added that Neil’s current behaviour and on-shore resting, while inconvenient, is considered “normal seal behaviour”.

“A wide open mouth is also normal but is not yawning or playing, it is a sign the seal is feeling threatened and to move away,” the spokesperson said.

“Wild animals are unpredictable and can be dangerous if harassed.”
