A new slide will soon snake its way into a popular Sandy Bay, replacing the previous big blue one that was removed for safety reasons over a year ago.
The 15-metre long ‘Green Machine’ will be installed at Parliament Street Reserve, alongside landscaping, new gardens and a picnic table.
Clark MP Simon Behrakis said the state government was providing $140,000 for the slide and the full cost of its installation.
“I can’t wait to see it built,” he said. “[It] will bring joy to many children and families for years to come.”
Construction is currently underway and is expected to be completed by March.
The previous slide was removed in October 2023 following an inspection that revealed significant deterioration.
“[An] inspection found it had deteriorated to the point it could not be repaired and presented a safety risk to those who might use it,” Council’s City Life Director Karen Abey told Pulse at the time.
The new slide design was chosen to meet Australian Safety standards. It features an enclosed top and several turns to control speed.
Soft fall areas will also be installed at both the top and bottom of the slide for added safety.
